Dear St. George’s Society Members and Friends,
As Toronto’s oldest charity and one of the country’s most established, the St. George’s Society of Toronto would like to announce the appointment of Christine (Christie) Yu as the incoming President of the Committee of Management (COM). Christine is the first woman of visible minority to lead the Society in its 190-year history. She brings to the role a diverse wealth of experience.
Currently, she serves as a Senior Advisor at the Ontario Public Service, where she leads projects addressing public policy challenges across different domains, including education and economic development. She has previously volunteered on advisory committees and been a patron for the Royal Ontario Museum, Canadian Opera Company, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Yonge Street Mission. She has been a Member of the Committee of Management of The St. George’s Society of Toronto since 2016.
Christine received her Master of Science from the University College London, University of London. It is during her studies in London that her interest and passion for British and English history, culture and tradition was solidified. She is honoured to be the Society’s new President and is looking forward to continuing her contribution to the historical charity and supporting those most in need in the City of Toronto through culture, education, healthcare social and community services.
The challenges facing our beloved city are numerous and formidable, making organizations like ours more essential than ever. While our charitable giving may have evolved over time, the Society’s history, purpose and commitment to help those less fortunate while celebrating our British roots and heritage have remained the same. As we embark on the coming year, your continued support and shared commitment is invaluable, and the COM is dedicated to ensuring that your membership remains a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
We extend our heartful thanks and gratitude to the outgoing President, Jennifer Green, who served with distinction during 2022-23. Jennifer will continue her involvement in the Society as Past President. The organization has greatly benefited from her extensive experience and boundless energy.
We are also delighted to announce the election or appointment of the following positions on COM for 2023-24:
President – Christine Yu
First Vice President – Paul Antunes
Second Vice President – Jeffrey Lewis
Third Vice President – Adwet Sharma
Past President - Jennifer Green
Treasurer – Aaron Bains
Secretary – Basil Ennab
Members of COM: Robert Baines, Kathryn Buis, Blair Francey, Glenn Carter and Frances Sommerville.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the St. George’s Society of Toronto. Together, we will make a positive impact on our community and honour our shared roots and heritage.
